Rice and Lake Urology have begun the use of laser in their office for the treatment of enlarged prostate and are the first in Columbus, Georgia to use the Indigo Laser system by Ethicon Endo-surgery in the office. Interstitial laser coagulation (or ILC) of the prostate has been used in the US over the last 10 years and has been found to be effective in the improvement of outlet obstructive voiding symptoms associated with enlarged prostate. Of particular note, clinical studies have shown up to a 92% increase in the urinary flow rate and 62% reduction in AUA symptom scores.

The great thing about the procedure is that it is performed in the office under a local anesthetic and may take as little as 3 minutes in total treatment time. It requires no incision and is done through a simple cystoscope. The patient upon completion is ready to go home. Ultimately the patient can be relieved of the need for medication to treat his prostate symptoms and can experience substantial improvement in his urinary flow.

We have tried a number of other outpatient treatments over the years and this appears to be the easiest, safest, best tolerated and most effective treatment to be offered.
